Infrastructure Work and Track Upgrades

Ontario Northland is undertaking several rail infrastructure projects to prepare for the return of the Northlander passenger train service. Each project will help ensure passengers enjoy a safe and comfortable travel experience.

Joint Elimination and Continuous Welded Rail

Joint elimination refers to the replacement of traditional rail joints with continuous welded rails (CWR). This eliminates gaps between rail sections, reduces wear and tear on train equipment and tracks and ensures a smoother, quieter journey. It also increases fuel efficiency and reduces operational costs.

Curve Adjustment

Curve adjustment is the process of raising the outer rail of a curved railway track to a higher level than the inner rail. This balances outward force on the train as it travels a curve. This work will help the Northlander travel curves faster and ensures a comfortable and stable ride for passengers.

North Bay By-Pass

Ontario Northland is building a new track to bypass the North Bay maintenance site. The upgrade will improve safety and reduce transit time for Northlander passengers by eliminating travel through other Ontario Northlander operational sites before arriving at North Bay Station.

Warning Systems and Crossings

Warning systems are structures installed where roads and railroad tracks meet. They alert pedestrians and drivers about approaching trains and are essential for keeping communities and workers safe. Upgrading warning systems along the corridor is an area of focus as we prepare for the return of the Northlander Passenger Rail service.

Other upgrades may include:

  • New signage
  • Improved sight lines
  • Installing an active warning system

  • Adding gates to an existing active warning system
  • Closing the crossing
