Under the direction of the Senior Manager Manufacturing Support, the Electrical Engineer will lead and grow the development of the electrical engineering duties.  This individual will be responsible for creating single-line diagrams, schematics, wire routing lists, bill of material lists and layout, as well as the installation and test procedures needed to fulfill the requirements for rail coach refurbishment.


  • Tracks and follow departmental activities under the jurisdiction of the North Bay Remanufacturing and Repair Centre (RRC)

  • Researches, evaluates, prepares cost estimates, and makes recommendations for the purchase and installation of new equipment/systems and modification/repair of existing equipment/systems.

  • Assists with the preparation of cost estimates, descriptions, summaries, and plans for capital budget submissions. Monitors spending on capital projects and makes reports as required.

  • Assists with the preparation of specifications for RFQ’s, RFT’s and RFP’s for purchase of new equipment/systems and modification/repair of existing equipment/systems. Analyzes responses and makes recommendations.

  • Develops electrical diagrams

  • Draws up wiring lists, validate wire size, routing and estimation of lengths

  • Specifies hardware elements and other components and create design standards

  • Develops installation and test procedures

  • Follow up in shop or on site for the manufacturing and installation of electrical components or electrical systems

  • Develops and mentors junior staff

  • Participates in technical proposals

  • Purchases material to complete projects.

  • Prepares and supplies detailed packages for installation of new equipment/systems, modification of existing equipment/systems, and operation/maintenance of equipment/systems.

  • Takes an active role in the health and safety of all employees. Assists the North Bay and Cochrane Joint Health and Safety Committees when requested.

  • Coordinates, schedules, and monitors the work of outside contractors and suppliers.

  • Maintains job files, resource library, and product literature. Supplies information to shop personnel when requested (i.e. Car Department drawing requests).

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from a University recognized by Professional Engineers of Ontario (P.E.O)

  • Professional Engineering Designation (P. Eng) as recognized by P.E.O

  • Project management skills and experience. Demonstrated capability of organizing and planning multiple projects

  • Experience in railway or transportation is an asset

  • Good knowledge of electrical schematics

  • Sound working knowledge or Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD and technical drawing

  • Experience in writing technical reports and specifications

  • Possess good interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a safety conscious environment and committed to Company Health and Safety

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment

  • Capable of working independently with minimal guidance or supervision
